It is continuously inspiring for us as teachers to see children blossom while they are learning.  We want to help you and your child get the most out of these important years. Together we are in the business of SERIOUS FUN.

Classes for 1, 2, 3 year olds = 45 min.
Busy sessions include lots of singing, playing and moving and are varied to maintain a young child’s limited attention span.
Sessions include
  Movement for large and small muscles through action songs, circle dances and movement songs;
  Beginning of in-tune singing;
  Playing a variety of sturdy instruments while exploring basic concepts of fast/slow, loud/soft and start/stop;
  Listening activities including musical stories, counting songs, and poems.
  We use streamers, scarves, ribbons, hoops, balls and puppets.
There are times for sitting and standing, moving and listening.

Activities are multisensory, so children’s brains are absorbing information through many senses at once.  The brain needs to process all this information simultaneously, and therefore grows important connections across the brain in order to handle the information.
Children learn how to drive their bodies, developing coordination, strength and a sense of how their body fits into the space around them.
Classes for 2 year olds include the beginning of hand signs to help develop in-tune singing
Classes for 3 year olds use chime bars for steady beat accompaniment to simple songs and the exploration of high and low sounds.  NOTE: If you have younger siblings in a level 3 class, please do not involve them in chime bar playing. Beater ends may come off and become a choking hazard.

Parent Role: The caregiver works alongside the child, encouraging and enjoying the session with them. Your role in the younger classes is as important, if not more so, than the teacher’s.  Your child will look to you for cues.  The teacher leads the session, but the benefits for your child are directly related to the enthusiasm and involvement shown by their parents.  You don’t have to be a great singer, that is not important, but if you are focused and having fun, your child will be too.  It is incredibly important that parents do not use the time in class to chat, as your child may think you are not interested in what is going on and he/she will “turn off” too.  Part of our role as teachers is to give you, the parents/caregivers, lots of ideas and suggestions of activities you could share with your child at home, as well as providing some quality time with your child in the class.
If you are unsure if our classes will suit your needs, families new to KMC are welcome to a free trial session. Please email Janet to organise this.

Classes for 4 year olds = 60 min.
As with the younger children, our music sessions are holistic. We include singing, listening and moving as a basis for developing musicality.  Children cannot play music effectively unless they can feel the music in their bodies.  Children need to experience music as a whole-body activity.  Instrumental skills are based on this foundation.
The sessions are action packed and include development of in-tune singing, creative movement, action songs, musical stories and circle dances. Children are encouraged to contribute ideas.
  We use the instruments and props from younger groups and add more.
  We play large wooden xylophones, chime bars and a large variety of non-melodic percussion instruments.
  Part playing is introduced and developed in level 5.
  We investigate rhythmic pattern, as a development from steady beat.
  Pictorial notation leads towards conventional musical notation.

Parent Role:This is a transitional period in a child’s life. While children are encouraged to participate independently, they often work better and feel supported when their grown up is beside them. This can be entirely the child’s decision.
If you are not directly involved in the session it is incredibly important that parents do not use the time in class to chat, as your child may think you are not interested in what is going on and he/she will “turn off” too.
